Final (Gunter 2025, How it Feels to Need to Write)

How it Feels to Need to Write is part simulator, part generative poem, and part creative aid. The primary user experience is simple, see bedroom with to-do list, turn on the radio and crack open a book. How much the user chooses to write in any of the books is up to them, but I wanted to keep the feature of each text being editable. I approach many of my coding projects with the intention of them inspiring other creative works of mine, with a secondary goal of being capable of being art-making tools in their own right. How it Feels to Need to Write is primarily for me. I can see myself adding to it in the near future. I have created an interface in which adding media (audio and text) to the pools from which the randomness pulls from will continue to be rewarding. I also spent more time with aesthetics in this project than I have previously, I wanted the final version of How it Feels to Need to Write to be off-putting, uncomfortable at times, but never uninspiring. I am incredibly aware that How it Feels to Need to Write may not be the most immediately gratifying work, and I may be the only user who feels inspired by it, but for the time being I feel quite inspired by it. Although I spent lots of time with this piece, my work is certainly not over, and there are lots of kinks I still have to work out. Namely the audio playback logic.
